Saving Water
Alice Springs residents are among the highest water users anywhere in Australia. An average Alice Springs household uses 535,000 litres of water per year. That’s around 1,500 litres of water per household each day!

Did you know?
- An estimated 80% of Alice Springs gardens are over watered
- A well managed lawn should only need watering once or twice per week in summer
- Installing a new 4.5/3 L dual flush toilet could save you 35,000 litres of water a year
- Fitting a 3-star water efficient showerhead will save around 60 litres on every 5 minute shower
- A 4-star washing machine can save 21 000 litres of water a year compared to older machines
- An average swimming pool can lose up to 60 000 litres of water a year through evaporation; a pool cover can reduce water lost by up to 90%.

WELS and SAWM

| Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Scheme label |
Australian residents are now able to easily identify and purchase water efficient products allowing savings of water and money, through the introduction of two water efficiency rating systems; the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme and Smart Approved WaterMark (SAWM).
WELS
WELS products are identified by labels which provide information in two forms;
- A star rating (the more stars the more water efficient)
- Water consumption or flow figures
The Scheme was introduced on July 1 2006 and includes washing machines, dishwashers, toilets, taps and showers. Some products have a transition period in which they can remain unlabelled, including dishwashers and washing machines (up to December 2007). For more information see visit the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) Scheme website.
SAWM

| Smart Approved WaterMark label |
The SAWM is a voluntary scheme for products and services which cannot be rated under the WELS program. Approved products so far include low flow car washes, cleaning devices, gardening products, rainwater tanks and greywater systems.
If you manufacture or distribute water saving products or deliver water saving services you may be interested in applying for a Smart Watermark certificate.
For more information see the Smart Approved WaterMark website.
